It’s time for our November 2023 dividend portfolio update and it was a pretty exciting month. After three consecutive months of losses the markets reversed course in a big way. This run up, along with our decision to purchase a share of SCHD at each pay period of our work-camping jobs, helped propel our little portfolio to new highs.
Of course we couldn’t have a good month without a little bit of frustration to go along with it. During the month our dividend portfolio account transitioned from TD Ameritrade to Schwab. Due to the timing of the transition some of our divided payments could not be automatically reinvested. It also appears that Schwab doesn’t reinvest dividend immediately. With TD dividends were reinvested on the same day they are received. Due to this one day lag dividends received on the last day of the month look like they will be reinvested on the first trading day of the following month.
Overall it’s not a huge deal, but as someone who likes things tidy and streamline it’s a bit of a nuisance. It will also have a slight impact on these updates when dividends are received on the last day of the month. Our report will show dividends received for a position, but there will be no change in the share count of our holdings. Then the following month the shares will update without showing dividends received. Again, not a big deal just annoying.
The transition to Schwab was very quick and easy. Other than dividend timing issues and this reinvestment quirk we are pleased with the process. There are many features that I feel are an improvement over the TD platform. The reporting and exports come out cleaner and their investment income tracker is better IMO. They also kept the think or swim TD trading platform intact which was really the best part of the whole thing. Hopefully some of these little delays can get worked out down the line.

In the month of November we received dividend payments from GIS, VZ, T, JEPI, EPD, ABBV, O, MAIN, QYLD and ABR. Our dividend payments for the month totaled $63.03. Because of the timing of the transition to Schwab only the proceeds from GIS, VZ, T, MAIN and QYLD were automatically reinvested back into the underlying positions. The dividend for ABR was paid on 11/30 which means it will probably get reinvested in December.
One of the great features we get moving to Schwab is gaining access to stock slices. This feature allows users to purchase fractional shares of some positions. We are excited about this because we haven’t been able to add share to some positions for months, if not years. Outside of dividend reinvestments adding shares of companies like ABBV, JNJ and IBM was difficult with limited funds.
Since we had a good amount of dividends not reinvest this month we used this feature. We bundled the dividends from ABBV, JEPI, EPD and O and put it all into just ABBV. It’s not a huge sum, but it was nice to have this option available. It was also nice add a little more to our largest position.
Now that we are getting steady paychecks we are purchasing 1 share of SCHD each pay period. In November we added to our positions in SCHD (2) and VICI (1). We then used the slices feature again to add to our positions in O (0.555), and VTRS (1.647).
Year to date we have received dividend payments totaling $645.36. This is a 40% increase over the same 11 month period in 2022. On a year over year basis our dividend distributions grew 23.44% for the month of November. Great month with excellent dividend growth and price appreciation!
| Stock | November 2022 | November 2023 | YOY Growth % |
| ABBV | $19.17 | $20.91 | 9.08% |
| ABR | $8.35 | $13.85 | 65.87% |
| EPD | $0.00 | $2.60 | 260.00% |
| GIS | $2.80 | $3.14 | 12.14% |
| JEPI | $4.39 | $4.78 | 8.88% |
| MAIN (m) | $1.60 | $2.82 | 76.25% |
| O (m) | $1.29 | $2.69 | 108.53% |
| QYLD (m) | $9.57 | $5.51 | -42.42% |
| T | $3.89 | $4.71 | 21.08% |
| VZ | $0.00 | $2.02 | 202.00% |
| Total | $51.06 | $63.03 | 23.44% |
We had really good dividend growth across almost all positions for November. The only note is on QYLD which delivered two payments in November 2022 which accounts for the large decrease in that position. That decrease brought down our monthly percentage a few points too.
At the month end for November 2023 our dividend portfolio was valued at $14.086. This is a 6.83% increase from October 2023 and a new high. It was a great way to end the streak of three consecutive negative months! On a year over year basis our portfolio value has increased by 11.29% from October 2022.
| Month | Portfolio Value | MOM % Change |
| October 2023 | $13,185.70 | 6.83% |
| November 2023 | $14,086.37 |
| Month | Portfolio Value | YOY % Change |
| November 2022 | $12,657.68 | 11.29% |
| November 2023 | $14,086.37 |
With the additional shares added to our positions and the reinvestment of dividends received our portfolio will now provide projected annual dividend income (PADI) of $819. That’s about $68 per month on average and is an increase of $11.00 per year. That’s up about $1 per month from our October 2023 update. Additionally, the yield on cost (YOC) for our portfolio decreased by 0.02% to 5.62%.
We have set a goal of reaching $1,000 PADI by the end of 2024. We will be slowing working our way in a positive direction in an effort to accomplish it. Being able to purchase some shares of SCHD on a regular basis for a few months will help move us forward. We will also most likely exit positions in companies like WBD that don’t add any value to our portfolio. It’s not a lot of money in that folding, but it’s doing nothing for us. And if the share price doesn’t appreciate and they don’t pay dividends there is no reason to have it.
Thank you for taking time to read our November 2023 dividend portfolio update and for following our blog. We hope the markets continue to have a strong run into the end of the year.
Happy investing!!
