Champagne Plans On A Beer Budget

As camping season begins, we are contemplating how we are going to manage our budget and still not short change ourselves on the experiences we have planned. Up to this point, we never really took budgets into consideration. When it came to vacations, our attitude was always “we are on vacation, what does finances have to do with it?”

To say I’m a little nervous about the upcoming adventures would be an understatement. We did well on our first test when we went on one of our regular Vegas trips, which you can read about here and here. The real question now is how do we maintain that momentum throughout an entire summer? A summer in which we will have numerous small trips planned to go along with a two week, six state journey. RV Buyers Guide

When it comes to RV’s, there is certainly no shortage of choices. In fact, it can be downright overwhelming if you are new to the industry and trying to decide on the first rig for your family. Do you want to tow it? Do you want to drive it? Do you want a trailer? Do you want a 5th wheel? Class A? Class B? Class C? Gas? Diesel? Tiny house? Ok, not so much on the tiny house, but they are an option now and I’ll admit I do enjoy the show on tv. Continue reading “RV Buyers Guide”

RV Myth-busters!

Up until now I have focused mostly on the financial side of our story. Let’s take a moment to discuss the ultimate purpose of this journey which is for us to live full time in our RV.

When we talk amongst friends or family and put our plans out their it’s always interesting to see their reactions. They typically range from blank stares to some sort of forced happiness. Although more and more people are choosing to live life on the road there is still a common misconception and stigma attached to it. Continue reading “RV Myth-busters!”

Finance Wishes and RV Dreams

I spent some time reviewing our financial situation and had mixed reactions to what I found. I have been in the accounting field for almost all of my professional career which you would think lends itself to smarter money decisions. In fact, when my wife and I first got married I used to watch every penny in and out of our accounts. I would religiously track our investments every month. The First Trip………….Part 2

The next morning, after our close call with Mr. Moose, we headed up to see the two ghost towns and spent a couple of nights just outside the park. Then the day we had waited so long for was finally here, Yellowstone!

Filled with excitement, we packed up the RV and headed to the entrance. The line was long, as expected, but the slow drive was worth it to see all of the amazing beauty the park had to offer. Once we got to our campground, we checked in and were assigned a site in one of the loops. As we pulled up to the site I noticed it was on the left side of the loop, opposite of our RV door. “Well, that kind of stinks!” Continue reading “The First Trip………….Part 2”

The First Trip……….Part 1

In the Summer of 2011, we decided it would be fun to rent an RV from the local chain store. My wife and I are kind of adventurous and decided we would only make reservations at the two places that were the most popular tourist spots, Yellowstone National Park and Mt. Rushmore. Every other place we would go to or stop at during our three week adventure would be unplanned. Just the family in a rental RV and the open road! What could go wrong?
